How to Make Perfect Hummus from Scratch

Hummus sprinkled with herbs and chilliEver wondered how to
make Hummus? That healthy dip/paste made from chickpeas that
you dip carrot and celery sticks into? Yes, that stuff? It is
called Hummus. Some say, “Hugh-miss”, whilst
others say “hum-miss” and some say “hom-miss”. However you say
it, it is YUMMY and wholesome and it’s easy to
make from scratch – you literally pop everything into a blender
and blitz!

Tahini is part of the ingredient list, which
is basically a paste made from sesame seeds that are roasted
then ground. Most supermarkets will sell this in their health
section and there are various South African brands making
Tahini. If however, you cannot find Tahini, you can
make it yourself
by frying 6 tablespoons of sesame
seeds in 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil. Once they have browned
nicely (be careful no to burn them), take them off the heat,
drain off the olive oil, allow to cool and then place in a
blender and blend the sesame seeds until smooth. Use this as
your Tahini paste.

Hummus can be served with any of the
following:

  • Carrot sticks

  • Celery sticks

  • Bread sticks

  • Cucumber sticks

  • Crackers

  • Pretzels

  • Potato Chips

  • Pita Bread

  • Naan

  • Baked Sweet Potato

  • Crostini

You can spice up your Hummus by adding a variety of
other ingredients too
– play around by adding an
ingredient that you love and adjust the consistency using olive
oil, water and lemon juice. Here are some ingredient ideas to
add a little pizzaz to your Hummus!

  • Basil

  • Coriander

  • Avocado

  • Beetroot

  • Garlic Mushrooms
